Orkambi should be available in the north - Begley
Sinn Féin MP Órfhlaith Begley has called on the British Government and the makers of Orkambi, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, to reach agreement which would make this treatment for Cystic Fibrosis available in the north.
Speaking following an event in Westminster on Monday which was organised as part of the ongoing campaign for the medication to be available on the NHS, the West Tyrone MP said:
“My engagement with campaigners and supporters at the 'End the Wait for Orkambi' event in Westminster has re-enforced with me the importance of Orkambi being made available for Cystic Fibrosis suffers in the north.
“Included among the campaigners was Liam and Eleanor McHugh from Castlederg whose daughter, Rachel has benefited from being able to access the Orkambi drug as part of a medical trial. Rachel is an example of the positive impact that this medical treatment can have on someone’s life.
“While this serious illness cannot be cured, Orkambi has been proven to significantly slow the rate of decline of lung function, which is the most common cause of death for Cystic Fibrosis patients.
“Cystic Fibrosis patients in the north should be able to access the treatment available to Cystic Fibrosis sufferers in the south.”
