Visit of Oireachtas Women’s Caucus to Stormont ‘historic’ - Fearon
Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has described the meeting of north and south Women’s Caucuses as ‘historic’ in working together to advance women’s issues on an all-Ireland basis.
The party’s Equality spokesperson was commenting after a delegation from the Oireachtas Women’s Caucus visited Stormont.
Megan Fearon said:
“The historic meeting of both cross-party Women’s Caucuses is important and the first step in working together to advance women’s issues across Ireland.
“2018 has been a huge year for Irish women, we have seen great change particularly with the Repeal of the Eighth amendment back in May.
“This year also marks the centenary of the women’s suffrage and the historic election of Constance Markievicz as the first woman abstentionist MP.
“Women’s rights are still under attack, women still are refused equal pay, denied equal representation and access to proper healthcare. This needs to change and it’s important that we tackle these issues north and south.
“Women on this island are stronger together. The issues that face women on a daily basis don’t recognise borders and neither should the political systems that represent them.”
