‘Astonishing’ that Minister Humphreys hasn’t met the Director of the ODCE to discuss investigation errors – Quinlivan

4 December, 2018 - by Maurice Quinlivan TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Business, Enterprise, and Innovation Maurice Quinlivan TD today described it as “astonishing” the fact that Minister Heather Humphreys has not held one meeting with the Director of the ODCE since she took up her post in the Department over one year ago.

Speaking today, Teachta Quinlivan said;

“Minister Humphreys will today bring draft legislation for the overhaul of the ODCE to Cabinet for approval.

“This move stems from the ODCE’s botched investigation into Seán Fitzpatrick and his activities with Anglo Irish Bank, which resulted in the accused’s trial collapsing in May 2017.

“I find it astonishing however, that since her appointment last year, Minister Humphreys has not held one meeting with Ian Drennan, the Director of the ODCE, to find out first-hand what went wrong in their shambolic investigation, and get an insight into what changes the Director thinks are needed at this agency.

“I am perplexed as to why this wasn’t the Minster’s top priority when she entered the Department. It raises the question as to whether the Minister has confidence in the current Director and also demonstrates Fine Gael’s lack of interest in dealing with white collar crime.

“Two reports have been compiled as to what went wrong at the ODCE, one by the Director himself and one by the Minister, but both reports remain unpublished despite repeated requests.

“A Freedom of Information request I submitted last month seeking this report from the Minister was refused, yet numerous media outlets are quoting this very report today.

“How does the Minister expect members of the Oireachtas to scrutinise this new Bill she intends to bring forward, when we are none the wiser as to the problems that have existed in the ODCE, as we have not seen sight of either reports? It’s a completely unacceptable situation.”
