Harris remarks on Roscommon eviction fly in the face of evidence – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has this afternoon called on Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to clarify remakes made yesterday evening regarding the eviction of a family in Roscommon last Tuesday.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;
“I believe the Garda Commissioner must clarify the comment he made yesterday evening, stating that Gardaí would not stand by and watch as bailiffs were assaulting people.
“Commissioner Harris has surely seen the video in which Gardaí are quite visibly standing by as bailiffs man-handle the elderly man who was being evicted.
“The comments of Commissioner Harris fly in the face of evidence, with the video being widely distributed online, and seen by hundreds of thousands
"There is anger, frustration and disappointment locally at the feeling that Gardaí effectively allowed the eviction, and stood to one side as what can only be called an assault was taking place.
“It’s simply not good enough, and the Commissioner must question what he said given that it is in complete opposition to happened.”
