Huge support for nurses in dispute which can be solved – Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald today marched in solidarity with striking nurses and midwives.
McDonald said the huge public support for nurses and midwives shows a demand for Government action to address the recruitment and retention crisis in the health services.
Speaking from the INMO rally, the Sinn Féin President said:
“This dispute can be solved.
“The crowds marching in Dublin city today show the huge level of public support that exists for our nurses and midwives.
“Support for the nurses has been obvious throughout this dispute. Indeed it was evident long before any industrial action because the public know that our health system is in crisis.
“Nurses and midwives do not want to be on strike. They took this decision because they are at the pin of their collar in terms of the conditions under which they work. We have a recruitment and retention crisis which is only getting worse.
“This dispute can be solved. The failure thus far to find a resolution has been down to the government’s refusal to engage respectfully and without preconditions. I urge them to listen to the workers and address the core issues of fair pay and safe staffing levels.”
