Seanad must defend north against Brexit impacts – Ó Donnghaile
Commenting after the Seanad Brexit Committee visited Belfast to meet businesses, trade unions and civic society, Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile said:
“It’s crucial that the Seanad’s Brexit Committee are present and engaged where the negative impacts of Brexit will be most acutely felt - that is the north of Ireland.
“Today’s meetings reinforced the clear reality that Brexit benefits no one here, the people, across a whole range of sections of our society, remain firmly opposed to the North being pulled out of the EU against our will.
“It is vital that our people are heard at the European Institutions and many organisations have expressed deep disapointment at the decision by government not to allocate Ireland’s two additional parliamentary seats to the North, yet again they feel left behind.
“Today’s meeting was of great use in shaping our committee’s work and we have committed to undertaking further outreach in the coming days and weeks.”
