Rights of Irish citizens in north should be ring-fenced post-Brexit - Anderson

6 March, 2019 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the rights of Irish citizens in the north post-Brexit should be ring-fenced and protected.

Speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels, Martina Anderson said:

"Irish citizens in the north will continue to be EU citizens after the north is dragged out of the EU.

"The rights of EU citizens post Brexit needs to be ring-fenced and protected and that must include Irish citizens who were born and reside in the north of Ireland.

"Existing mechanisms, including the Common Travel Agreement will not protect our rights as Irish citizens.

"The British government's ending of EU freedom of movement with Brexit will have huge implications for Irish citizens in the north as EU rights holders.

"A process is needed which would allow EU citizens in the north to continue to access, exercise and enjoy their EU rights post Brexit.

"That must also include Good Friday Agreement rights which should also be protected from Brexit."
