Huge Victory for Students on Rent Hikes - Eoin Ó Broin TD

11 April, 2019 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has commended the work of the students on ensuring that student specific accommodation on and off campus will now be covered by the rent pressure legislation, and will therefore be subject to the 4% rent hike cap.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“This morning the Housing Committee voted to accept amendments to the Residential Tenancies Bill that ensure that now student specific accommodation on and off campus will be covered by the rent zone pressure legislation.

“Students will also now have access to the Residential Tenancies Board in certain cases where a dispute arises.

“It’s almost a year since the student protest began against the 'Shanowen Shakedown' where students in DCU were facing rent hikes of between 20% and 27% in one academic year.

"Students in Galway also staged a protest in what became known as the 'Cúirt Shakedown'. The USI was also instrumental in highlighting the impact of these huge rent increases.

“This is a huge victory for all those students across the State,  who were very vocal in their opposition to these unfair rent increases and firmly placed the issue of rent gouging on the political agenda.

“This resulted in strong cross-party support for a Sinn Féin Bill which sought to achieve this and positive engagement with Minister and opposition parties to produce the best possible legislation.

“While private sector student specific accommodation already has RPZ protection and any student being hit with rent hikes above 4% can today to take a case to the Residential Tenancies Board, students in on and off campus student specific accommodation will now have protections of RPZ and access to the RTB for dispute resolution”.
