Policing Authority Report follows a worrying pattern on Garda Reform – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has welcomed the most recent report by the Policing Authority in to the area of Garda Reform, however, he has expressed his concern that it is following a worrying pattern of a failure to implement reform.
Teachta Ó Laoghaire said:
“The latest report by the Policing Authority follows a worrying pattern of a failure to implement reform by An Garda Síochána.
“The statement from the Authority, that An Garda Síochána have repeatedly over-promised and under-delivered, is a strong one and underlines this failure to implement reforms.
“Their report highlights that the majority of the recommendations in the programme, which was adopted by the Government in July 2016, remain outstanding.
"This is unacceptable, and I would express that view to the Garda Commissioner and Minister Flanagan.
“Finally, I note that the Policing Authority provides a great service in putting pressure on the Gardaí, and holding them to account.
"I am unsure that the proposal for an internal Garda Board, meeting behind closed doors, or an Inspectorate with no specific powers over the Gardaí can offer that.”
