Out of touch government incapable of dealing with the housing crisis – Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald has branded the government as being “out of touch” and incapable of dealing with the housing crisis.
Speaking while attending the “Raise the Roof” rally in Dublin the Sinn Féin President said:
“The housing crisis is out of control and worsens every day.
“Behind every outworking of this crisis, there are real lives and real people, parents, families, homeowners, tenants, homeless, and those who aspire to own a home.
"Leo Varadkar and Eoghan Murphy are out of touch. Their plan has failed.
“The Taoiseach had the cheek to say last year that young people who want to buy a home should go and ask their parents for the money for a deposit.
"Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy tells us that things are getting better, when in reality rents are still increasing.
"This government thinks nothing of handing over billions to a private company for broadband, and hundreds of millions for cost over runs in capital projects.
"But they refuse to invest in building homes at the scale required, refuse to tackle run away rents and refuse to reign in the vulture funds.
"This housing crisis has been created and sustained by successive Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael governments.
"It can and must be ended. It will be ended with bold and urgent action.
"We need a doubling of investment in social and affordable housing. We need a temporary tax relief for renters and a three year rent freeze.
"We need to enshrine the right to housing in the constitution so that no other government can walk away from the requirement to ensure a home for citizens."
