O’Neill welcomes RTE exit poll showing huge popular support for United Ireland
Sinn Féin Leas Uachtarán Michelle O’Neill MLA has said now is the time for the Taoiseach and the Irish Government to prioritise planning for reunification.
She was speaking in response to the RTÉ exit poll reported today, which shows that 65% of voters polled have indicated they would vote in favour of a united Ireland if a referendum was held tomorrow.
Michelle O’Neill said:
“The Good Friday Agreement provides a peaceful democratic pathway to Irish Unity.
“The issue of Irish Unity has taken on a new dynamic because of Brexit, which has again showed the failure of partition and division.
“Demographics are changing and so too is the political landscape across Ireland.
“All parties that see the value of reunification and hold to the ideal of unity must act to begin a national conversation.
“There is a particular onus on the Irish government to begin to plan for unity, to progress the debate and to publish a green paper for unity.
“Sinn Féin is campaigning for a referendum on Irish unity, which has increasing popular support demonstrated once more by this RTÉ exit poll.
“Now is the time to look to the future and to talk about, to plan and to deliver a new, modern and united Ireland.
“The political momentum is moving in that direction.
“Taoiseach Leo Varadkar cannot continue to ignore these present realities. He should establish an All-Ireland forum to start the process and conversations on our shared constitutional future.”
