Government must address crisis in elderly care provision with new focus and priority – Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Disability Rights and Older People Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has said that urgent and priority address must be given by the Government in relation to the crisis in Elderly Care provision.
HSE reports show that elderly people face being trapped in hospitals due to funding shortages for the Fair Deal scheme, with homecare funding being almost at its limit and funding deficits for cancer care.
Teachta Ó Caoláin said;
“This Fine Gael led Government is living in cloud cuckoo land on Irish Society’s two big issues - housing and health. They need to wake up and give urgent address to these issues.
“In advance of budget 2020, we still have the Fine Gael Minister for Finance Pascal Donohoe trumpeting tax cuts for top earners.
“It is absolutely incredulous. How much longer can we as a society tolerate our elderly family members, friends and neighbours being subjected to the indignities they currently face in and by our health system?
“Sláintecare would provide an address of our health systems deep fault lines.
“It gives me no comfort to describe a system that thousands and thousands of our citizens depend on each day for vital medical care as dilapidated.
“Whilst it is not all about money, additional funding would help bridge the gap short term and act as a sticking plaster.
“Medium to long term, serious reform of the entire health service is required.
“Delivering Sláintecare must be prioritised and resourced and should commence in budget 2020.
“This Government has proven itself to be totally imprudent with taxpayers money on major infrastructural projects.
“Talk about tax cuts must cease and investment in public services to build capacity and look after our citizens, all our citizens, must be prioritised and acted on with the urgency now clearly required.”
