‘Tory leadership contenders show complete disregard for Ireland’ - Ó Muilleoir
Both contenders to be the next British Prime Minister have shown complete disregard for the people of Ireland by dismissing the Brexit backstop, Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said.
The party’s Brexit spokesperson was commenting after both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt ruled out any Brexit backstop to prevent a hard border in Ireland.
He said: “Clearly, neither Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt are listening to the EU who have repeatedly said that Brexit negotiations are over and that the withdrawal agreement and backstop will not be reopened.
“They are also ignoring the wishes of communities, business leaders, trade unionists and educationalists the length and breadth of this island who have made it clear that a backstop is required to protect us from any hardening of the border.
“Through their posturing, both Jeremey Hunt and Boris Johnson are making the prospects of a no-deal crash out Brexit all the more likely. In so doing they are showing a complete disregard for the people of Ireland who will be most affected by such a catastrophe.
"The Withdrawal Agreement is imperfect, but it is the only deal on offer.
"The backstop contained within it is a guarantee that no hard border will be imposed on this island and protects the Good Friday Agreement.
“Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt and their allies in the DUP may want to wish it away but legal protections are required and the EU27 must continue to stand firm whoever the next British Prime Minister turns out to be.”
