Kearney extends solidarity to NIPSA workers
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has extended his solidarity to NIPSA workers taking industrial action today.
The northern spokesperson for Employment and Workers Rights said:
“Sinn Féin supports the NIPSA members who are today taking industrial action across the north to highlight the fact they have received a below inflation pay increase for the ninth year running.
“This strike action is yet another result of failed Tory policy here in the north, which has seen workers' rights eroded and departmental budgets slashed year on year.
“Cuts to department resource budgets since 2012 have resulted in a real term loss of hundreds of millions of pounds, meaning that departments are struggling to meet the 2% salary uplift.
“Sinn Féin calls for these cuts to end and for workers to be given the appropriate pay increase.
“Sinn Féin recently launched ‘Towards a New Employment Model; our new policy document on workers' rights in the north.
“At its core is our party's support for the Living Wage as a minimum standard for decent pay.
“Sinn Féin believes that government as a major employer should lead the way, along with all public sector bodies, and pay their own staff the Living Wage as a minimum.
“We have met with the permanent secretary of the department of the economy to raise the concerns of public sector workers and to lobby on their behalf.
“We will continue to support public service workers and work to create a fairer economy with a living wage for all and an end to zero hour contracts.”
