Revelations regarding testing of mesh emphasise need for moratorium - Flynn
Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn said revelations from Chartered chemist Dr Chris DeArmitt regarding the testing of mesh, emphasise the importance of Sinn Féin's continued support for a moratorium on its use.
Órlaithí Flynn said:
“It is deeply concerning to learn that the testing of the plastic material used in vaginal mesh implants, in the words of expert witness Dr Chris DeArmitt ‘is way less than you would see on a vacuum cleaner or a washing machine’.
“It is even more disturbing to learn that the polypropylene plastic can degrade after implantation and is not bio-compatible so that it is likely to trigger an immune response causing inflammation and pain.
"Sinn Fein recently challenged new recommendations that suggested the current moratorium on the use of mesh implants could be lifted if women were better informed.
“We challenged these recommendation on the basis of a potential breach of Human Rights obligations to protect health and we put the case to the Human Rights Commission who have raised our concerns with the Department of Health.
“Sinn Féin will continue to work to ensure that women and men injured by mesh have access to appropriate treatment and that appropriate action is taken to protect patients from future injury.”
