Provide adequate services to victims to contaminated blood scandal - Hazzard
Sinn Fein MPs Chris Hazzard and Elisha McCallion have urged the Department of Health to provide adequate services for those affected by the contaminated blood scandal.
Speaking after meeting with the permanent secretary of the Department of Health, Richard Pengelly, South Down MP Chris Hazzard said:
“The contaminated blood debacle is the biggest scandal ever in the health service and has impacted on the lives of so many people yet the Department of Health has failed to address it properly.
“I met with the permanent secretary of the department alongside my colleague Elisha McCallion MP and challenged him on those failings.
“I welcome the commitment we were given that the Department will look at designing a service to meet the needs of those affected by the contaminated blood scandal.
“This will involve looking at what services, financial support and care is required by those who have already been identified and diagnosed as being affected by the scandal as well as those who may not yet have been identified.
“We also raised the disparity in compensation payments between the North of Ireland and Britain and the financial stress this caused.
“We will continue to meet with the department to ensure that all those affected by this scandal get the services and care they deserve.”
