History being retained due to Public Pressure – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has said Minister Joe McHugh’s statement that History is to remain a core subject is welcome, but requires clarification.

Teachta Ó Laoghaire said:

“It is welcome that the Minister is listening to what the public have to say on this matter. The support for History being a Core subject is a matter that has concerned a lot of people, from teachers and University lecturers, the President, and any amount of people who understand how important History is.

“History is crucial to our sense of self, to understanding our History, but also to understanding the history of Europe and the World. It informs our judgement, and ability to consider the world.

“At a basic level, History is a part of a broad education about wisdom and understanding, far beyond merely Educational as a preparation for industry and employment.

“This is something that has been recognised by many commentators, and by the Public as a whole in my view, who have sought that this decision by rescinded.

“The Minister has announced that History will be a special Core Subject at leaving cert level. While it is welcome that the Minister has acknowledged the concerns that exist and the campaign in support of History, he does need to clarify what is meant by a ‘Special Core’ subject, according to his statement.

“I hope that this is not a fig leaf and some form of enhanced short course.

“I will be discussing his proposal with him and demanding clarity on what is meant by this. I will be raising this with the Minister in the Dáil today.

“As far as Sinn Féin is concerned the teaching of History as a core subject at Junior Cycle is essential, and in Government we would insist on that.”
