Morgan slams as "derisory" estimate for social housing programmes
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Arthur Morgan T.D this afternoon slammed as “derisory” the 5% increase in the estimates for Local Authority and Social Housing Programmes.
Deputy Morgan said: "A 5% increase in the estimates for Local Authority and Social Housing Programmes is derisory. This will not see any progress being achieved in housing the 48,000 families on social housing waiting lists. This figure does not keep pace with the annual increase in the costs of building houses or purchasing land. For 12 months Sinn Féin has been asking the Minister for Environment and Local Government if the Government will accept the NESC recommendation for an increase of 73,000 permanent social housing units between 2005 and 2012. Today we got our answer. It is clear from the estimates that the Government has no intention of addressing the housing needs of those languishing on waiting lists." ENDS
