DUP must deal with political reality

18 November, 2005

Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness MP commenting on today's meeting between An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and a DUP delegation led by Ian Paisley Snr has said that the DUP need to come to terms with the current political realities and engage with Sinn Féin.

Mr McGuinness said:

"The DUP must deal with the current political realities. They now meet with An Taoiseach. They accept the architecture of the Good Friday Agreement. They need to act on the logic of this and engage with Sinn Féin.

"The unionist community needs confident and positive leadership. They need politicians who can deliver for them. There is no way to do this other than through the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement, which means entering into government with Sinn Féin. That is the political reality that the DUP can not escape from." ENDS
