Young people must be included in the scrutiny of stop and search usage - Kelly
Sinn Fein MLA Catherine Kelly has reiterated calls for young people to be included in external monitoring of the PSNI’s use of stop and search powers.
The party's spokesperson on children and young people said:
“A report published today by HMICFRS, an official inspectorate, into the use of stop and search by the PSNI has identified a number of problems, including inadequate record keeping, inconsistencies in training and shortcomings in the quality of external scrutiny.
“Work by the Children’s Law Centre, Include Youth and Queen's University has highlighted the impact of stop and search on young people here. Clearly greater scrutiny, as recommended in this report, must include young people.”
