Additional €1 million for South Tipperary General A&E department welcomed - Martin Browne TD

14 September, 2020 - by Martin Browne TD

Sinn Fein TD Martin Browne has welcomed news that an additional €1 million had been announced for a modular extension for the A&E in South Tipperary General hospital.

Deputy Browne but has however asked for clarity as to the long term plans for the extension, as well as reiterating his support for calls for a dedicated room for patients presenting to the A&E with mental health issues.

Teachta Browne said:

“While any additional funding is to be welcomed, I have contacted the HSE to clarify what the plans for the modular extension will be post Covid-19. €1 million is not an insignificant amount of money and it is only reasonable to know how it will be used long term.

“I have also repeated my support for a call for a dedicated room in the A&E for mental health patients. This is something multiple groups have called for as part of the solution to the problems with metal health services in South Tipperary General hospital.

“I would hope that if more A&E space is being made available this would be facilitated.

“While much more is needed for adequate mental health care for Tipperary. The various groups I have met with have all asked the minister to facilitate this so as to not force people attending A&E for mental health reasons having to sit in the A&E for hours waiting for treatment.

“It is a simple request that is entirely workable and should be provided without any further delay.”
