Finalised BusConnects plan welcome but investment, communication and continued engagement must follow – Darren O’Rourke TD

Darren O RourkeSinn Féin Spokesperson on Transport, Darren O’Rourke TD, today welcomed the revised plan for Dublin’s BusConnects and called on Government and the NTA to ensure the plan is funded and resourced and communicated clearly to commuters.

The Meath East TD said, also, that the level of community engagement with the project is unparalleled. He called on the NTA to continue in this vein.

Speaking today, Deputy O’Rourke said: “The public transport service in the Greater Dublin Area needs investment and modernisation and the BusConnects plan can deliver this.

“Done right it can reduce commuting times for workers, better connect new and existing communities and provide a greener transport option for more people.

“Over the past few years the NTA has engaged extensively on their proposals, receiving over 70,000 submissions from members of the public.

“I welcome the publication of the finalised plan of the New Dublin Area Bus Network, and in the fact that the NTA recognise what they got right, but also where they went wrong and where they needed to revisit.

“Many of the issues raised by the general and commuting public have been incorporated into this finalised plan, which is very welcome, but further engagement with local communities going forward will be key to delivering positive change for the bus network in the Greater Dublin Area.

“Localised issues will undoubtably arise, and it’s important the NTA work with local communities to address their concerns.

“As public meetings are not possible now due to Covid-19, the NTA must ensure their communication strategy for BusConnects is clear and accessible and people on the ground are fully informed of the plan and its implications.

“The government must also commit to funding to deliver this plan, as significant state investment is now needed to transition to greener buses, to redesign the network, improve bus corridors and modernise our ticket and fare system.”
