Anderson welcomes funding for factory workers artwork

Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed the announcement of funding for the redevelopment of Harbour Square in Derry which will feature a new artwork celebrating the history of the city’s factory workers.

The Foyle MLA said:

“I welcome today’s announcement of £173,500 by the Minister of Communities, Carál Ní Chuilín, for the redevelopment of Harbour Square and, in particular, the fact that it will include an artwork celebrating the city’s factory workers.

“Over decades, Derry’s factory workers, particularly the women who worked in the shirt factories, made a huge contribution, not just to the city’s economy but to the very fabric of the city, and it is right that they will be recognised in this way.

“This funding from both the Department of Communities and Derry and Strabane District Council will allow for detailed design work for the redevelopment of Harbour Square and the new artwork.

“This is great news for all those who have worked so hard for many years to see a public artwork to celebrate the history of Derry’s factory workers and I look forward to the project’s completion.”
