Call for Herceptin information camapaign

1 February, 2006

Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Geraldine Dougan has called on the Department of Health to consider a campaign of awareness around the availability of the Drug Herceptin in the early stages of Breast Cancer.

Ms Dougan said:

"Following the recent decision of the Department to make the Herceptin Drug available to women in the early stages of Breast cancer, it has come to my attention that many women are still not being informed that they are HER2 Positive and that they may benefit from the drug, even though all women are tested for this gene."

"This is matter of serious concern. Women diagbnosed with breast cancer need be told that they will be automatically tested for the HER2 gene and that if they are positive that Herceptin is available and that with Herceptin treatment there can be an improved outcome.

"It is my belief that the Department should consider a public awareness campaign around the availability of this drug, such as leaflets containing information at Hospitals and GP surgeries, so that people know that this Drug may be available to them. ENDS
