International community must stand by people of Yemen – Finucane

Sinn Féin MP John Finucane this evening addressed a ‘No To War on Yemen’ virtual protest.

The North Belfast MP said:

“This evening I was delighted to join on a panel with human rights organisations and international political figures including Jeremy Corbyn, Yanis Varoufakis, US Congressman Ro Khanna, and member of the French National Assembly Danièle Obono, in opposition to the war on Yemen.

“The war in Yemen has been raging on now for over five years.

“The blind support of the British Government for the Saudi Arabian regime and the provision over £5.3bn worth of military equipment to the Saudis has enabled and prolonged this unjust and horrific war.

“This support of the British Government for a regime that shows callous disregard for human rights, nationally and internationally, is morally bankrupt.

“I welcome that President Biden has previously committed to ending US support for the war in Yemen and I call on the British Government to also immediately withdraw military and financial aid to Saudi Arabia.

“The Irish Government must also play their part on the UN Security Council in ending this war, embargoing the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia must be considered a priority for the UN.

“Sinn Féin will continue to give a voice to oppressed peoples and nations across the globe.”
