Economic recovery post COVID must support workers, families and small businesses - Archibald

30 April, 2021 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said the economic recovery post COVID must support workers, families and small businesses.

The party’s economy spokesperson was speaking after the announcement of details surrounding the £100 high street voucher scheme and holiday-at-home voucher scheme.

The East Derry MLA said:

“As we rebuild the economy post COVID we have an opportunity to create a fairer, more balanced and greener economy.

“Ordinary people must not pay the price for this crisis, workers and families need to be supported in the recovery including through improved working conditions and an end to zero hour contracts.

“I welcome the publication of further details on the £100 high street voucher and holiday-at-home voucher schemes.

“It is important these schemes are timed appropriately to ensure they deliver the most benefit to businesses and the local economy.

“When retail, hospitality and tourism reopen there will be initial pent-up demand as people are keen to get out and about.

“Providing the vouchers later in the year will be a better time to deliver this scheme.

"I’ve requested a briefing for the Economy Committee to get the full details of the schemes.

“This is a large proportion of the funding allocated for the Economic Recovery Action Plan and therefore it needs to be targeted to ensure it pays off for workers, families and businesses.”
