Ó Donnghaile welcomes Seanad motion rejecting British government’s amnesty proposals

Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed a cross-party motion rejecting the British government’s amnesty proposals is being debated in the Seanad tonight.

Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said:

“I’d like to welcome tonight’s debate in the Seanad rejecting the British government’s amnesty proposals. The motion has cross-party support and, in that regard, it is highly significant. The cross-party motion ‘totally rejects’ the British government’s proposals for ‘dealing with the past’.

“The British government’s amnesty plan for dealing with the past is an attempt to cover up state murder on a grand scale of those killed by its armed forces or through state collusion with loyalist paramilitaries.

“For decades the British government have prevented relatives from getting truth and justice.

“Tonight’s motion reflects the national and international concern and anger in human rights organisations and political parties at the British government’s attempts to protect its armed forces and those political leaders who gave them impunity to kill.”
