Need for clarity regarding South Kerry CAMHS compensation scheme – Pa Daly TD

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Pa Daly has called for clarity on the details of the new compensation scheme announced by Minister Mary Butler relating to South Kerry CAMHS.

Speaking this morning, Teachta Daly said:

“I welcome the establishment of a scheme for compensation for those impacted by this scandal and that liability will not be an issue for the families concerned. However, there is clarity required in respect of some of the details of how the scheme will operate. 

“The use of a panel of experts is unusual, as the parents of some patients have already sought reports from psychiatrists. I would urge Minister Butler to clarify how this will work and to clarify who will make up this expert panel.

“I am also concerned about a time limit being placed on the scheme as the status of patients who received treated pre-2016, or whose treatment commenced in 2016 but continues, is unclear.

“The need for action regarding a review into services in North Kerry has become even more urgent. 

“It is obvious to me that the situation in North Kerry will be just as serious and the Minister should state clearly now that North Kerry patients will be included in any scheme.”

It is essential that a State apology is now made to the families of the Stardust tragedy.

@MaryLouMcDonald has said that the apology must address the failures of governments, not just 43 years ago in the aftermath of this tragedy, but every day since then.

Following a meeting with the families of the Stardust tragedy this morning, @MaryLouMcDonald has said that "a full state apology to the families must be made now, and it must address the systematic failure over 43 years".
