Gerry Kelly to meet Police Ombudsman

12 May, 2006

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Policing and Justice Gerry Kelly will this afternoon meet with the Police Ombudsman in her offices in Belfast. The meeting will take at 2pm and is at the request of Sinn Féin.

Speaking before the meeting Mr Kelly said:

"Our position on the current policing arrangements is well known. We have requested today's meeting with the Ombudsman to discuss a range of issues.

"These include the powers of the Ombudsman's office and some concerns we have about their scope and range. We will also raise a number of individual cases of concern which have been working on for sometime.

"One area we will discuss is the role being played by former RUC Special Branch detectives. At least one has publicly admitted stealing confidential files and the Ombudsman herself expressed concern this week at a lack of co-operation from these individuals." ENDS
