Heavy Garda Presence at St. Patricks Cathedral should be withdrawn immediately

19 May, 2006

Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Daithí Doolan has voiced his deep concern at the decision to cordon off the area around St. Patrick's Cathedral this morning and to place about 40 Gardaí at church entrances.  He called for the heavy Garda presence to be withdrawn immediately.

Speaking from the area this morning, Councillor Doolan said:

"I am deeply concerned at the developments this morning at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.  The decision to cordon off the area and to introduce a heavy Garda presence is entirely unnecessary and will do nothing but complicate an already difficult situation.  It is also worrying that the men are now being refused visitors.

“This is a serious humanitarian situation which the government needs to address properly.  Heavy handed interventions such as those witnessed this morning are certainly not the way to resolve the plight of these men.

"I am calling on Justice Minister Michael McDowell to intervene personally in this matter and to review the mens cases to take fully into account what is happening in Afghanistan at the moment.   If there is any threat to their safety or lives then they should not be sent back to Afghanistan.”ENDS
