Gerry Kelly appeals for calm in face of provocative parades

12 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Belfast Gerry Kelly has appealed for people to remain calm this evening as Orange parades make their way home.

Mr Kelly said:

"I would echo appeals made by other political leaders for people to remain calm despite the deliberately provocative nature of Orange parades seeking to march through catholic areas.

"Residents in Ardoyne have publicly appealed for people from outside that area not to travel to Ardoyne for this evenings return parade and I would support them in that appeal.

"Republicans will do all in our power to ensure that this evening passes off without major incident. However others must also play their part. Ultimately the Orange Order in particular have a direct responsibility for their members, bands and followers as they make their way home." ENDS
