MABS needed in Lucan

3 August, 2006

Sinn Féin Dublin Mid West Representative Joanne Spain has called for a Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) to be established in Lucan, following a meeting with several people from the area on Wednesday night (2 August).

Spain said:

"With the cost of modern living spiralling out of control, it is very easy to find yourself in debt or just unable to manage. The MABS service in Clondalkin Village, which is free, has done a remarkable job over the years in helping people to organise their finances.

"Up until now, people from Lucan who ended up in this position have had to travel to Clondalkin to seek advice from the MABS office there, but with the substantial growth of both areas, especially Lucan, in recent times, it is unfeasible for one office to try to help such a large population.

"The people I met last night told me that they felt Lucan is the poor relation when it comes to getting services. They have no social welfare office and have again, had to travel to Clondalkin for welfare payments. Yet when talk of building a social welfare office starts, it's one for Adamstown. When locals call for a primary healthcare centre, they are told that it will be built in Adamstown.

"Lucan is one of the fastest growing areas in the state and as such needs better infrastructure to sustain development. A small start would be the location of a MABS office to help people struggling financially to get out of debt depression." ENDS
