Peace dividend must be substantial and additional - de Brún

6 October, 2006

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today welcomed discussions aimed at delivering a financial package for the six counties but warned that such a package must be substantial and additional.

Ms de Brún made her comments after officials from both departments of finance on the island met this morning to discuss a financial package for the six counties.

Speaking today Ms de Brún said:

"I welcome the fact that discussions have taken place between both governments regarding a financial package for the six counties. Sinn Féin has consistently led the calls for a peace dividend and has been active in ensuring that this is delivered. However, a financial package must be pursued whether or not a political deal is reached by November 24th - the DUP cannot have a veto on this, nor can it be dependent on their ability to share power with the rest of this.

"Moreover, any financial package must be substantial and additional. Planned expenditure dressed up as new will not suffice.

"The British Government has a responsibility to deliver this given that they have set the six counties adrift over the years. Consistent under funding of essential services and an infrastructure deficit is reflective of the British Governments‚ priorities over the years.

"We must now see a commitment from the British Government that it is prepared to deliver on its promise to help cement the peace process and deal with the consistent under funding issues. Sinn Féin will continue to work towards securing a peace dividend in the time ahead." ENDS
