Hanson should think outside the box and promote Ireland on all Island basis - de Brún
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today called on the British Government to "think outside the box and support a single unified approach to Ireland in Europe".
Ms de Brún made her comments as British Direct Rule Minister David Hanson officially launched the 'Taking our Place in Europe' strategy for the six counties engagement with the European Union.
Speaking today Ms de Brún said:
"It strikes me that this presented a wonderful opportunity to engage with Europe on an all Ireland basis, yet again we have the insular approach advanced by the British Government, to the detriment of people and development across the island. It is not good enough that this strategy merely pays lip service to all Ireland co-operation in a five line paragraph.
"The clear mandate of the Good Friday Agreement is for an island wide approach to social and economic development. The British and Irish Governments now need to move beyond policy mismatches, back to back infrastructural development and partionist planning.
"What we need now is new thinking and not more of the tired old approaches of the past." ENDS
