Ferris calls on Greencore to honour redundancy commitment

21 November, 2006

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD has again called on Greencore to honour its original commitment on a redundancy package for former workers at the Mallow sugar factory. Deputy Ferris said that this issue was underlined by this morning's announcement that Greencore intend to build a massive new development on the site of the former Carlow sugar factory.

Deputy Ferris said: "I have previously drawn attention to the extremely bad way in which Greencore have treated the former workers at Mallow. They have refused to honour the original redundancy package that was agreed with the unions, and have subsequently refused to comply with a Labour Court order. The fact that they have now announced that they are embarking on a development worth over €1bn proves that they are well capable of paying a decent package and the Government must ensure that they do this before any planning proposal of this nature is even considered."
