Gallagher - Fire Risk Assessment Secured for Dublin

7 December, 2006

COUNCILLOR Felix Gallagher - Sinn Féin's Dublin West election candidate, has given a warm welcome to the news that a Dublin-wide Fire Risk Assessment will be carried out as a matter of urgency. The decision was taken by Dublin City Council following a Sinn Féin motion on the issue. Cllr Gallagher has lobbied for such a fire study for a number of years, particularly for the Dublin 15 area which has seen such massive growth.

Cllr Gallagher said "I have been part of a Sinn Féin delegation that has been meeting with Dublin Fire Brigade Union over the last two years in order to secure this Fire Risk Assessment. Our fire fighters have grave concerns at the lack of equipment and resources they have to deliver their service. Of equal concern is that they have no idea how bad the situation is as a risk assessment has not been carried out for over 20 years.

In Dublin 15 terms this means there has been no risk assessment since the Blanchardstown station opened in 1985. There has been no increase in staff or appliances since then. In that time Blanchardstown has gone form a large village, to a metropolis bigger than many of our counties. It has the added risks of the M50, an Institute of Technology, the biggest chemical and radiation plant in the State and a population of approximately 100,000. To say that this has put additional pressure on fire services is something of an understatement.   I have been trying to advance this issue in Fingal but there has been an unwillingness to advance the issue, therefore I am delighted that my party colleagues have been able to deliver on this. CRÍOCH.
