Adams welcomes Andersonstown News electoral registration initiative
West Belfast MP Gerry Adams has today welcomed the initiative taken by the
Andersonstown
News after they provided an electoral registration form in
today's copy.
Mr
Adams said:
"Tens of thousands of people are missing of the
current electoral register.
In West Belfast alone over 8000 are missing
from the roll. This is
completely unacceptable and has come about
because the Electoral Office
chose to compile the new register from
scratch.
"Sinn Fein have put forward two suggestions to see the
gap bridged. The
first is to roll over those missing from the
last register and the other is
to allow registration to take place up
to 11 days before any election. We
will continue to raise these matters
with the British government.
"I welcome the efforts of the
Andersonstown News today to try and address
the situation in West
Belfast and I would encourage the readers of the paper
who have not
registered to fill in and return the form." ENDS
