O'Toole welcomes opening of Port Tunnel

20 December, 2006

Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Larry O'Toole has welcomed the opening of the port tunnel today. Speaking today Councillor O'Toole said while there are many concerns regarding the opening of the tunnel people should not rush to be overly critical of the project.

He said, "I want to welcome the opening of the long awaited port tunnel. While there are many concerns regarding the tunnel the benefits it should bring to the people of Dublin are immense. There will be teething problems, as there would be with any major project of this magnitude, so it needs to be allowed a settling in period.

"Sinn Féin recognises that there are major concerns regarding the implications of the opening of the port tunnel and for that reason I was part of a Sinn Féin delegation that met with the Dublin City Manager on Monday morning to express our concerns. We raised a number of concerns and in particular we raised concerns about the impact for the M50 and the toll bridge with the extra traffic coming from the tunnel.

"The council have assured us that there are adequate measures in place to deal with the extra traffic. However, they seem to have adopted a very optimistic approach to the concerns we raised and with that in mind we will continue to monitor the situation." ENDS
