Doolan-EU must Persuade DUP to Deliver on Commitment to Devolution

15 January, 2007

The National Forum on Europe intends using this years 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome as the theme for much of its activities during the coming months. To start the year’s activities the Forum has invited members of the public and organisations to submit their vision for the European Union of the future.

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on Europe Cllr. Daithí Doolan has today presented his party’s wide ranging submission entitled ‘An Ireland of Equals in a Europe of Equals – Sinn Féin’s Vision for the European Europe’ to the National Forum on Europe.

The submission outlines:

  • Sinn Féin’s critical engagement with the EU
  • Sinn Féin’s commitment to a rights based EU
  • Ireland’s role in a Globally Responsible EU
  • Sinn Féin’s commitment to championing Workers’ Rights
  • The Necessity for Full Equality throughout the EU
  • The Right to an incinerator free Europe & a Clean World
  • The EU’s role in the Irish Peace Process

Speaking in Dublin Castle Cllr. Doolan said “I am delighted to have the opportunity present this submission on the future of the European Union on behalf of my party. I welcome this initiative of the National Forum and it is our hope that the information gathered from this positive act of engagement will be fed back to the EU Parliament, Council and Commission.”

Cllr. Doolan continued “Sinn Féin wants to build a Europe of Equals, a true partnership of equal sovereign states, co-operating for social and economic development in Europe and beyond. We want an EU that promotes peace and demilitarisation. It is in this context that we would call on our EU partners to support our country’s peace process at this crucial time. We call on the EU to encourage the DUP to deliver on their commitment to devolution and power sharing.”

Cllr. Doolan concluded, “both the EU and Ireland are at a critical point in time. Democracy, social justice and peace must now be priority deliverables. The six counties must have an accountable community based police service with justice powers transfered to the assembly if it is to truly realise a sustainable peace. Sinn Féin has supported EU measures that promote and enhance human rights and peace; we now call on the EU to support us in our effort to do the same here in Ireland.”
