Sinn Fein welcomes Appointment of International Chair for Bill of Rights Forum
Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Human Rights and Equality, Caitríona Ruane has today welcomed the appointment of Mr Chris Sidoti, a leading Australian human rights lawyer to independently chair the Roundtable Forum on a Bill of Rights for the North.
Ms Ruane said:
"Hopefully today's appointment of Mr Chris Sidoti, a leading Australian human rights expert, as the independent international chair of the Roundtable Forum on a Bill of Rights will inject the kind of confidence and momentum required to take forward the Bill of Rights promised in the Good Friday Agreement.
"Over several years Sinn Fein has worked consistently with the Irish and British governments, NGO's and other equality/human rights organisations to reach this landmark point.
"The task of bringing about a Bill of Rights will undoubtedly present its own unique challenges to politicians and civic society alike. Today's highly significant appointment of Mr Sidoti should be viewed as an opportunity to finally conclude on the Bill of Rights in the coming year.
"Sinn Fein is confident that with enough goodwill from everyone concerned that we can bring about a strong and inclusive Bill of Rights that will protect rights to the highest international standards and we look forward to the early commencement of the Roundtable Forum under Mr Sidoti's direction."
