Record levels of Illegal Dumping
Sinn Féin South Down MLA Willie Clarke has said that new figures released by the Countryside Alliance that nearly 2.5 million incidents of unlawful rubbish dumping were recorded in the past year comes will come as no surprise to many people.
Mr Clarke said:
"The figures obtained under the freedom of information act by the Countryside Alliance found that there have been nearly 2.5 million incidents of unlawful rubbish dumping have been recorded in past year. This figure will come as no surprise to many people.
"The cost and the amount of extra working hours needed to clear up the mess and environmental hazards being created by incidents of unlawful rubbish dumping is on the rise all the time. Its costing councils and private land owners millions of pounds annually to clean up the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of household and industrial waste that are being dumped illegally at sites throughout the Six Counties.
"The British Governments response to the practice of illegal dumping across the Six Counties has been woefully inadequate. Whilst the British Government sit on their hands, unscrupulous people are making untold profits at the expense of local communities and the surrounding environment.
"Illegal dumping is wrong and must be tackled effectively. Sinn Féin has long called for an all Ireland approach to dealing with this problem and the issue of waste management in general." ENDS
