Anger after DoE reveal that 10 times more spent on Belfast than Derry

30 March, 2007

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has demanded that Derry must be given equitable consideration when money is being spent by any governmental department.

Speaking after it was revealed that the Department of Environment spent ten times as much money on environmental schemes in Belfast as they did in Derry Mr McCartney said,

"Even taking into consideration of the size of Belfast to Derry the spending on Belfast was disproportionate to that of Derry. This is clearly another example the inequalities that exist between the greater Belfast area and area east of the Bann. This must be addressed and monies should be allocated on an equitable basis where strict criteria should apply.

"Hopefully with the new incoming assembly and the advent of local accountable ministers this problem can be addressed so that all areas can access money on a fair and equitable basis." ENDS
