Council told to stop excuses and get on with housing people
Dún Laoghaire Sinn Féin general election candidate Eoin Ó Broin has described excuses from Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for its failure to provide urgently needed social housing as nonsense. Mr. Ó Broin was reacting today to comments from a council official who, according to Mr. Ó Broin, "Trotted out the usual council line that land is too expensive in Dún Laoghaire creating difficulties in the provision of social and affordable housing."
Mr. Ó Broin said, "This week, after I had once again highlighted this council's shameful record on social housing an official trotted out the usual council line that land is too expensive in Dún Laoghaire creating difficulties in the provision of social and affordable housing. This excuse is absolute nonsense.
"Given the vast amount of private housing developments throughout the borough the council could have made significant inroads in housing the now over 3,500 families on the housing list. If Part V of the Planning and Development Act had been properly implemented twenty percent of all the new housing developments throughout the borough would have been social and affordable. However Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has consistently refused to properly implement Part V.
"The reality is that they are not interested in social housing. If they were they would develop the land already in their possession at Fitzgerald Park and Mounttown Flats. This land has remained derelict for a number of years now but the council have done nothing with it. I am calling on the council to stop the excuses and get on with the business of housing its people." ENDS
