Disappointment at Arts Council decision to cut funding for Cultural Centre

17 April, 2007

Sinn Féin South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey has called for a reversal of an Arts Council decision to cut funding to An Droichead in South Belfast.

Mr Maskey said:

"This award winning Irish language cultural centre has first class resources, classes and staff and attracts visitors from around the world. The centre has a Naíscoil, a youth club and a drop in centre under its roof.

"It welcomes over 3000 to its events yearly. Last year the centre won a prestigious All Ireland award from Glór na nGael for its excellence and it has been a welcome addition to the area.

"I am calling on the Arts Council to reconsider their decision as this sets an unfortunate precedent to cut funding to this project in a disadvantaged area." ENDS
