Action plan to tackle spiralling cocaine urgently required - McDonald
Speaking at a conference this morning on cocaine use, Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald called on the new Junior Minister with responsibility for the Drugs Strategy and Community Affairs to formulate, resource and implement a strategy to tackle the growing cocaine crisis in Ireland.
Ms. McDonald said today, "Sinn Féin and communities throughout the State have spent the last number of years highlighting the alarming rise in cocaine abuse in the State. Unfortunately for a long time our calls fell on deaf ears. However, I want to welcome the belated recognition in the programme for Government of cocaine as a problem.
"What we now need to see is the development, resourcing and implementation of a strategy to deal with this ever growing crisis. The previous Fianna Fáil/Progressive Democrat Government voted down a Sinn Féin Private Members motion in May of last year which called for an action plan to combat spiralling cocaine use. It is imperative that the new administration does not make the same mistakes as its predecessor." ENDS
