Warning over safety along our Coastlines
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has backed calls from the Coastguard for people not to take a boat out to sea unless they have navigational equipment onboard and in particular warned parents of the dangers of children going unsupervised using "toy" inflatable boats along our coastlines.
Mr McCartney said:
"I back the calls from the Coastguard for people not to take a boat out to sea unless they have proper navigational equipment on board as well as the proper life jackets and additional safety equipment.
"There is a tendency during the summer months for the number sea rescues along our coastlines to rise. We need to ensure that anyone taking a boat, canoe, surf board out know all the dangers that the sea holds and are fully equipped for all instances.
"I would also appeal to parents not to let young children to go unsupervised in the use 'toy' inflatable boats. In many cases these boats are nothing more than toys and can be carried off by wind and tide very easily It doesn't matter if it's at the beach on a sunny day, river or lake they all hold the potentially dangers if something goes wrong.
"Anyone taking a boat out should tell someone their plans and what their expected return time back is .Taking these simple safety measures can help prevent tragedies from happening." ENDS
