Vicious attack in Woodside Forest

14 August, 2007

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann has commended local children and residents who went to the aid of a local man from the Woodside area who was viciously attacked by a number of young men as he walked through the Forest near his home at 9.30pm on Monday evening.

Ms McCann said:

"Firstly I would like to wish the victim of this attack a speedy recovery and commend the actions of local children and residents who went to his aid. This is the latest in a long line of attacks and serious assaults that have taken place in this forest. There have been 2 vicious rapes over the past number of months and no one has been held accountable.

"After speaking with the victim of this attack and some of the local residents it appears that the PSNI were unwilling to enter the Forest to try and apprehend those responsible and I feel serious questions need to be asked about why this is the case.

"Those responsible for attacks like last night must be held accountable for their actions. They cannot be allowed to terrorise our community any longer and must be removed from our streets.

"I am calling on anyone who has any information about the identities of those responsible for last nights attack to give that information to the PSNI.

"I would also hope that those organisations that have responsibility to make the forest safe do so immediately. The whole area needs to be re-landscaped so that people cannot use the cover of the forest to carry out vicious crimes." ENDS
