Sheehan expresses sympathy on death of Basque prisoner

Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has expressed sympathy following the death of Basque Prisoner Igor Gonzalez Sola in a jail in Donostia.

The West Belfast MLA said:

“On behalf of Sinn Féin, I wish to extend solidarity and condolences to the friends and family of Basque political prisoner Igor Gonzalez Sola.

“Igor had been transferred back to the Basque Country after spending 15 years in multiple prisons across the Spanish state and despite being seriously ill, remained imprisoned.

“We are almost a decade into a peace process and the Spanish state has a responsibility to resolve the situation of the remaining 230 Basque prisoners, including proposals for an early release scheme.”
