Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing Eoin Ó Broin TD has tabled 11 amendments to the government’s new Residential Tenancies Bill in order to strengthen the protections within it for renters.
Teachta Ó Broin said:
“I welcomed the publication of the Bill yesterday, but I voiced a number of concerns that some of the protections were weak and that stronger protections could be afforded to renters at this distressing time.
“The amendments I submitted seek to extend the ban on evictions for six months.
“The amendments also ensure that any future eviction ban is linked to restrictions on people entering your home and future county by county lockdowns.
“Also instead of giving tenants with notices to quit an additional ten days to look for elsewhere to live after the eviction ban is lifted, we propose 28 days.
“There are a number of other technical amendments submitted. All aimed at strengthening the protections available for renters.
“I hope the Minister for Housing will accept these amendments as they are fully within the spirit of the legislation.”
