Government cannot keep abandoning people in fuel poverty - Claire Kerrane TD

9 February, 2021 - by Claire Kerrane TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Social Protection Claire Kerrane TD has said the Government cannot continue to abandon people struggling to pay their heating and electricity bills.

Speaking today, Teachta Kerrane said:

“This week, particularly poor weather is expected across Ireland with temperatures set to plummet and snow expected in many areas.

“For many workers and families already under huge financial pressure, this will mean they will struggle yet again to pay for electricity and heating bills as they try to keep warm.

“This is totally unacceptable. Last week, I brought a motion to the Dáil attempting to compel the Government to support workers and families struggling with their heating and electricity bills. Shockingly, Government TDs from across Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Greens opposed this and refused to give these supports.

“As the current poor weather highlights, this issue isn’t going away. Workers and families will continue to face the unacceptable choice between paying their energy bills or paying for other necessities like rent, the mortgage or groceries.

“The Government cannot keep ignoring this issue and abandoning those in desperate need of support. I am urging the Government to come forward with a plan to help these workers and families. This plan needs to go beyond the only offering by Government to date, which is seeking support through the Community Welfare Officer. This is not enough.

“This matter will not simply go away by pretending it is not there. Workers and families deserve better and need these essential supports now. I will continue to work to hold the Government to account on this.”
